It is the responsibility of the Major Crimes Unit to investigate homicides, potential homicides, crimes of a violent nature, suicides, deaths by auto, police shootings, fatal fires, and other matters that may have a significant impact on the public. In addition, members of the Major Crime Unit assist local police departments, and the FBI in investigations involving bank robberies.
Arson/Environmental Crimes Function
It is the responsibility of the Arson/Environmental Crimes Function within the Major Crimes Unit to work in conjunction with local, county, state and federal law enforcement, fire and health agencies in determining the origin and cause of suspicious fires and investigating crimes against the environment. When there is reason to believe that a fire resulted from arson or that an environmental crime has occurred, this function will assist the aforementioned agencies with the criminal investigation. This function is also responsible for the coordination of training for police, fire and health officials in arson and environmental crime investigations. The function is also responsible for coordinating incidents involving "weapons of mass destruction" within the County and working closely with the Morris County Counter-Terrorism Task Force.
Vehicular Homicide Function
It is the responsibility of the Vehicular Homicide Function within the Major Crimes Unit to investigate crashes to the fullest extent possible, to identify causative factors, and when applicable, pursue criminal charges when a substantial degree of recklessness is determined. This is achieved via a joint partnership with many of the Municipal Police Departments in Morris County who have highly competent individuals trained in the area of crash investigation. These individuals support the efforts of the Vehicular Homicide Function and participate as part of the Investigative Team.
Cold Case Unit
It is the responsibility of the Cold Case Unit to investigate "unsolved homicides" that occurred within Morris County. An investigation is turned over to the Cold Homicide Case Function when all leads have been exhausted.
Major Incident Response Team (M.I.R.T.)
If a major incident occurs that will potentially place significant demands on the available personnel and resources of a unit within the office, the Major Incident Response Team will be activated to supplement the unit's investigative efforts. Personnel assigned to various investigative units within the office comprise the Major Incident Response Team.
