Sex Crimes/Child Endangerment Unit
  • Assistant Prosecutors and Detectives are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to assist with investigations and legal advice.
  • Work in partnership with Municipal Police Departments and the Division of Youth and Family Services on a response as needed.

    • Child Neglect
    • Child Sexual Abuse
    • Adult Sexual Assault
    • Stalking
    • Child Luring
    • Attempted Abductions of Children
    • Lewdness
    • Voyeurism
    • Invasion of Privacy
    • Child Pornography
  • Maintains intelligence information related to all above listed allegations
  • Coordinates the SANE/SART Program to assist victims of sexual assaults.
    • Forensic examinations of victims of sexual assaults.
    • Evidence collection
  • Conducts interviews of child victims under the age of 12 by specially trained Detectives assigned to the SCCEU.

Megan's Law Function

The Megan's Law Unit's primary responsibility is to ensure that criminals who have been convicted or adjudicated of sex crimes, are registered with Law Enforcement and that the Community is aware of the presence of most dangerous offenders. This is accomplished in the following manner:

  • Maintain registration records of each sex offender who was convicted, adjudicated, or found not guilty by reason of insanity, who reside or attend school in Morris County;
  • Ensure that the registration information of offenders that move from one residence to another is tracked and shared with appropriate law enforcement agencies;
  • Investigate the backgrounds of offenders who have registered to determine the level of risk that he or she poses to the community;
  • Work closely with Local Law Enforcement Officers, the New Jersey Division of Parole, the Division of Youth and Family Services and the New Jersey Department of Probation Services;
  • Provide legal advise to these agencies in dealing with violations of the sex offender registration laws and related topics;
  • Prosecute classification hearings for sex offenders who are determined to be at a moderate or high risk to the community;
  • Maintain a list of registered school and community groups that are eligible to obtain notification of the presence of sex offenders in the community;
  • Ensure that notification on appropriate sex offenders is posted on the New Jersey State Police Sex Offender Internet Registry
  • Provide individual notification to schools and registered community groups where Court approval has been obtained;
  • Coordinate door-to door community notifications on those offenders to be at the highest risk tore-offend;
  • Provide legal training and update programs for law enforcement personnel;
  • Provide Community Education Programs to those receiving notice of the presence of a sex offender;
  • Investigate those individuals who fail to register or those individuals who violate the terms of Community Supervision for Life;
  • Prosecute these individuals in a vertical prosecution method, meaning the same team of prosecutors and detectives will handle the case of investigation initiation through Grand Jury, trial and sentencing; and
  • Investigate and prosecute allegations of harassment against registered sex offenders.

S.A.N.E./S.A.R.T.

It is the responsibility of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Sexual Assault Response Team Program (SANE/SART) to assist victims of sexual assaults. Specifically trained nurses will perform medical forensic examinations in accordance with procedures established by the Division of Criminal Justice, in accordance with the Attorney General Standards for the provision of services to victims of sexual assaults. Morristown Memorial Hospital, St. Clare's Dover and Denville Hospital Campuses and Chilton Memorial Hospital are participating medical institutions.
